It’s way more difficult to get attestation on the documents if you are not living in India. The most prominent reason is your status, i.e. the NRI. You being a non-resident hardly know about the competent authorities and the procedure to get an unmarried certificate or birth proof, let’s say.

Like every country, India also revises its rules, policies and legislations. There is another possibility. You might be aware of the whole immigration process when you left this country 5 years ago. But, that was the case of half a decade back. What now?

This is certain. This blog will get you every update about what’s going on in the immigration department. Here, you can go through the solutions for unmarried certificate attestation in India.

Let’s get started with the kind of attestation, which will later unfold the ways to get it signed from which competent authorities.

Types of Attestation

  • Notary –For authentication of documents from the notary public in the court
  • Home Department- For verification of the personal documents, like birth certificate.
  • Human Resource Department (HRD)- For authentication of education certificates & degrees or employee’s history
  • SDM Attestation-It’s an alternative of the home department, which can be a verification authority in some rare cases
  • Chamber of Commerce – For verification of entrepreneurship documents or business papers to carry out commercial goal
  • Embassy – For carrying out visa and passport purposes, which can include authentication of business papers or educational certificates also
  • Apostille-For MEA attestation in the cases where aspirants are going to the country that is a member of the Hague Convention, which requires no further verification during immigration

Here, I’m going to share more on the attestation of the unmarried certificate in India.

Unmarried Certificate

This certificate is a disclosure of your single status. Even if you are a divorcee, widowed, separated or in your bachelorhood, it clearly states. The stamp of the competent authority declares it a legal document, which no foreign government can reject for consideration.

Non-residents generally show it for solemnizing marriage with a foreigner. And sometimes, the foreign employer can also seek it before recruiting. Only few instances are there when a foreign university asks to submit it.

Issuing Authority

You should remember that there is no other than the SDM who can issue it. And, this is originally called single status affidavit. The competent authority provides it upon thoroughly verifying the address, birth and witnesses’ citizenship proofs. You can contact India embassy also for getting it from there.

Let’s move to the categorization of this certificate.

The immigration documents are broadly categorized under:

  • Personal Documents
  • Educational Documents
  • Commercial Documents
  • Immigration Documents

The single status or unmarried certificate comes under the first category, i.e. personal documents. The applicant needs to follow this hierarchy for attestation of the unmarried certificate.

  • Get it from the SDM.
  • Get it counter-attested from the Ministry of External Affairs department.
  • Visit Embassy to get it counter-attested one more time.
  • Apostille stamp is optional. You can get it if the country you are temporarily residing in is the member of Hague Convention.
